Middle East and Maghreb | New E-commerce Law in Oman

On May 18, 2008, Oman legalized electronic transactions by adopting the Electronic Transactions Law - a significant milestone to increasing economic opportunity in Oman.

Beginning in 2006, CLDP has worked with the Oman Information Technology Authority (ITA) on the development of the Electronic Transaction Law in Oman.  CLDP's legislative e-commerce drafting programs provided officials with guidance and practical experience in the development of effective e-commerce laws for the modern global economy.  Through consultations with leading experts in government and academia, officials from some of the world's leading IT companies, the Oman officials gained insight into the principles, benefits and best practices involved in designing and implementing e-commerce laws.

In a letter, Director General of Legal Affairs, Dr. Yahya Nasser Al-Khusaibi, said the CLDP program greatly assisted the Ministry of Legal Affaris in the review of the e-commerce law.  CLDP plans to continue to assist the Government of Oman with the implementation of the new Electronic Transactions Law, including consultations to assist with the drafting of e-commerce regulations and building the e-commerce platform in Oman.
