CLDP Hosts Consultations for Central Asia-Afghanistan Expert Level Working Group on Standards in Washington D.C.

September 14, 2017 - September 19, 2017

CLDP, in collaboration with several government agencies as well as U.S.-based standards setting organizations, will host the fifth meeting of Central Asia-Afghanistan Expert Level Working Group, for government officials with responsibility for setting and enforcing standards from Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The meeting will take place over four days, September 14, 15, 18, and 19, in Washington D.C. During the meeting, advisors will continue leading discussions with the visiting delegates on good regulatory practice, interagency coordination, and public-private cooperation, including reliance on private sector standards organizations and market-based incentives for compliance. The meeting will also continue the work of previous meetings by introducing delegates to energy efficiency standards implemented by small to medium sized industrial enterprises in the United States, including site visits to rated facilities in the area. Lastly, the Group will continue its work on regional approaches to standards for reducing the level of lead in paint.

By relating standards development, compliance and enforcement to economic development generally, this meeting will equip participants to advocate more forcefully for the further integration of standards regimes in the region. Emphasizing and implementing international best practices in regulatory matters can facilitate sustainable economic development, increased investment, and open markets.
