CLDP Trains Qatari Judges to Apply Bankruptcy Law

-
CLDP organized a three day workshop May 26-28, 2008 at the Qatar Legal and Judicial Studies Center focused on bankruptcy, the role of mediation, and the process of reorganizing businesses. The group of 19 Qatari judges, judges in training, and lawyers participated in discussion of how to apply current Qatari bankruptcy law and aspects of the law that make it more or less of an option for struggling companies. The workshop included a comparative study of bankruptcy law around the world, and the judges worked on case studies that illustrated the major issues important to companies experiencing temporary difficulties. With the exponential growth of the economy in Qatar, many new companies are entering the market, and Qatari companies are doing increasing business with outside enterprises. Qatar has a new 2006 Companies Law that has provisions for bankruptcy, but despite facing financial difficulties, no Qatari company has used the law to file for bankruptcy to date.
