Dominican Republic: Workshop on Best Practices in Implementing Government Procurement Programs for SMEs

-

On January 16-17, 2019, CLDP conducted a workshop on best practices in government procurement directed to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and women-owned businesses in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. More than 50 participants representing the Dominican General Directorate for Public Contracting (DGCP), university SME centers, and associations of small and women-owned businesses gathered to discuss barriers and opportunities for female entrepreneurs and other small enterprises seeking to build and expand their businesses through government contracts. CLDP experts included the CEO of MET Community, a non-profit dedicated to training and mentoring small businesses, the founder of CF Creative, a marketing and communications firm specializing in women- and minority-owned businesses in the United States, and a Procurement Center Representative of the U.S. Small Business Administration. The workshop also included a panel discussion with representatives of local banks on financial resources available to small and women-owned businesses in the Dominican Republic. Before the workshop, on January 15, CLDP organized a one-day strategy session with various stakeholders including the DGCP, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, and university SME centers to coordinate a national strategy for the promotion of small and women-owned businesses. These activities kicked off CLDP’s expansion of its programming aimed at supporting women-owned businesses in the Dominican Republic with funding from USAID as part of the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity Initiative.
