Insolvency Rountables and Colloquium

On March 17, CLDP held a one-day workshop in Dubai for delegations from Yemen, Morocco, and Bahrain made up of judges, government officials, private sector representatives, and legal advisors on the implementation of insolvency legislation using international best practices.CLDP experts provided insight into insolvency regimes and notable bankruptcy cases in Canada, Japan, the US and UAE, spurring a lively discussion, where delegates shared their country's experience in insolvency legislation, the role of the judiciary, decriminalization of bankruptcy proceedings, and the impact of insolvency on economic growth. At the conclusion of the roundtable, participants discussed next steps in terms of technical assistance programming, which included judicial training, review of existing laws, and private sector engagement to encourage sound and sustainable insolvency frameworks in each respective country.
 

To provide a broader context on insolvency reform in the region, CLDP and its delegates participated in the Second Judicial & Financial Colloquium in Dubai on March 18 and 19, held by Hawkamah, a UAE-based Corporate Governance Institute. The head of the Moroccan delegation presented on the insolvency developments in Morocco as well as the role of the judiciary. Additionally, CLDP experts spoke on issues of Shari’ah and insolvency that was well-received by the conference participants, which included practitioners, judges, bankers, and government officials from the US, Europe, and the Middle East.
